What is CNC turning?

CNC stands for “Computerized Numerical Control” technology. The term describes the computer-aided turning process used in the production of round, cylindrical, and conical components.

Turning is a subtractive manufacturing process. This means that it is not the machine but, in this case, the clamped workpiece that rotates at high speed, while the fixed turning tool moves toward the workpiece in a feed motion and removes the material being machined.

After milling, turning is the most commonly used industrial manufacturing process for mechanical components.

Further classifications of CNC turning processes

The turning method used depends primarily on the machining surface of the workpiece. For example, there are the following categories of turning methods:

  • Shaping Turning
  • Face Turning
  • Profile Turning
  • Screw Turning
  • Rolling Turning
  • Turning

In modern machining centers, such as those at CNC24, it is also possible to link CNC lathes together to increase production.

Advantages of CNC Turning

Modern CNC lathes make it possible to produce workpieces with outstanding precision in a very short time. Thanks to the fully automated process, a quality standard can be achieved that is second to none.

The margin of error that must be factored in for manual turning processes can be virtually eliminated with CNC turning. Thanks to its very high production speed and consistent quality, CNC turning is particularly recommended for mass production.

Unlike manual turning, automatic turning allows for precise planning and prediction of production times, which helps increase customer satisfaction.

CNC Turning – The Biggest Benefits at a Glance:
  • Very fast and reliable production
  • Complex geometric shapes are possible
  • Accurate and precise workmanship
  • very high quality standards
  • short setup times
  • Accurate planning of production times
  • also suitable for machining very hard materials
  • Outsourcing can offer good value for money
  • high safety standards

In modern machining centers, such as those at CNC24, it is also possible to link CNC lathes together to increase production.

Fundamentals of CNC Turning

The turning of CNC components can be explained in four main steps:

1. Preparation

Before a workpiece can be turned, the raw material must be prepared accordingly. In CNC turning, semi-finished products such as bars or plates are primarily machined. Depending on the material, size, and the number of pieces to be processed, these are cut to size using a saw, a flame cutter, or a laser cutting process.

2. The Armor

In the second step, the corresponding machine tool is also prepared. To do this, the semi-finished parts are clamped into place. The following points should be noted in particular:

  • Geometry of the workpiece
  • Machine Cutting Forces
  • Accessibility During Editing
  • Work Sequence

Clamping is a delicate process and must be performed with the utmost precision. For non-experts, it’s a major challenge that can sometimes take hours. The support of a specialist like CNC24 is invaluable here.

3. Programming

The machining program, which ultimately provides the CNC machine with clear instructions for manufacturing the part, is called an NC program. The software used for this process is CAM software (Computer-Aided Manufacturing software). Program creation is one of the few steps that is still performed manually, directly on the CNC machine. This task requires proven experts who, depending on the complexity of the request, spend anywhere from minutes to hours on the job.

4. Manufacturing

The final step involves manufacturing the workpiece. This is once again carried out fully automatically by the CNC machine. In some cases, employees must switch between machines during the process or set them up together at the beginning. The machines used may be lathes capable only of turning, or combination machines capable of both turning and milling. The production time can be precisely calculated using the digital process and depends primarily on the material and the production volume.

Selection of Materials

For which products is CNC turning suitable?

CNC milling has the edge when it comes to complex designs. CNC turning, on the other hand, is better suited for drilling and shaping operations.

Because it allows for a precise finish, turning is particularly recommended for round surfaces. Common products manufactured using CNC turning include, for example:

  • Nuts and Bolts
  • Gears
  • Roles
  • Burner nozzles
  • Ball joints
  • Turbines
  • Housing
  • Pipes
  • Discs
  • Beam

When it comes to the manufacture of machine parts, it is important to note that backward compatibility and asymmetry generally play a decisive role in choosing turning over milling as a manufacturing process.
