What is meant by turning stainless steel
In addition to stainless steel milling, turning is another production technique in the field of machining or subtractive processes for smoothing stainless steel workpieces and shaping them into the desired end product.
The terms mean that chips are removed step by step during the machining of the stainless steel piece until the desired shape is achieved. The difference to milling stainless steel is that although the workpiece is clamped during turning, it moves during machining.
In CNC turning, the chips are removed from the tool layer by layer by a turning tool attached to the tool slide. This moves in a feed motion against the workpiece, which simultaneously rotates around its own axis.

Various turning processes
The most common turning methods include the following:
Longitudinal circular turning

Cross facing
It all starts with your call or message. We will check your request and provide you with a transparent quote within a few days. No matter how complex your order is, we are happy to take on any challenge.
Once we have agreed a production order, we adapt our modern manufacturing processes and techniques to the manufacture of your products. As the client, you will receive your components on time and in the agreed quality.
We also meet complex demands, requirements and designs. This enables you as a company to meet your deadlines and fulfill your orders to the delight of your customers.
Cross-piercing turning
Processing takes place in both transverse and longitudinal directions.
This requires the use of lathes that have special grooving cutters to carry out this process.
Cross-cut turning is the right choice for producing symmetrical shapes.
The name of the turning method is always derived from the result of the surface treatment. Facing, for example, makes the surface flat.

Turning stainless steel simply and digitally
What special challenges can arise when turning stainless steel?
To avoid unpleasant deformations or thickening in unwanted areas, a cooling lubricant supply should therefore be used.
It is also advisable to keep the setting angles extremely small in order to avoid excessive burr formation. Only high-quality machines should be used for turning stainless steel.
This ensures that the surfaces of the components to be manufactured are not damaged.
Guaranteed Quality
What else needs to be considered when turning stainless steel?
The machinability of stainless steel is primarily dependent on its alloy content. The carbon content is the most important value, as it determines the structural components.
There are also influencing factors such as heat treatment and the original manufacturing process, i.e. whether the stainless steel alloy was forged or cast, for example.
Tips for turning stainless steel
Tips
- You generally achieve the best results with long-chipping stainless steel
- Only a lathe with cutting forces between 1800 and 2850 N/mm² is suitable for turning stainless steel
- Would you like to turn ferritic or martensitic stainless steels? Then a Rockwell hardness of at least 55 is the prerequisite for this
- Is your stainless steel piece inherently difficult to machine? Add sulfur to the alloy, which can improve machinability
- Nickel and molybdenum are often used to improve temperature resistance. This is basically correct, but pay attention to the ratio. The higher the proportion of these materials, the lower the machinability at the same time
- To determine the correct speed and feed rate for stainless steel turning, refer to the available tables or the largest diameter of your chip removal piece
- The feed rate should be as high as possible during rough turning for economic reasons. During finish turning, a lower feed rate generally results in improved surface quality
