Manufacturing Technology
What is a fit?
Fits play a central role in manufacturing technology and design, as they determine dimensional accuracy and the interaction between components. The term “fit” describes the clearance or interference between two components that are joined together, such as a shaft and a bore.
Depending on the requirements for the connection, a distinction is made between a loose fit, an intermediate fit, and a press fit. With a loose fit, there is always a certain amount of clearance between the components, which allows for easy assembly. Transitional fits allow for both clearance and interference, depending on the dimensional tolerance. With an interference fit, on the other hand, the outer component is pressed firmly into the inner component to ensure a backlash-free connection.
Choosing the right fit depends on the specific application and load requirements. Compliance with the ISO 286 standard is particularly important here to ensure standardized dimensional accuracy. Correctly determining the fit tolerances not only improves the functionality of the assembly but also extends its service life. Use tools such as our fit calculator to easily and precisely determine the ideal fit for your components.
Game Fit
A clearance fit is a type of fit in which a small amount of clearance always remains between the mated components, such as a shaft and a bore.
This makes it easy to assemble and disassemble the parts, which is particularly important in applications that require a certain degree of freedom of movement or regular maintenance.
Typical applications for a clearance fit include shaft bearings, where low friction and minimal wear are required. The fit tolerances are defined such that the diameter of the bore is always larger than that of the shaft. This ensures precise dimensional accuracy and easy assembly. For designers, selecting the correct clearance fit is crucial to ensuring the desired functionality.
Transitional Fitting
The transition fit combines the characteristics of a loose fit and a press fit. Depending on dimensional tolerances and manufacturing accuracy, the connection can be designed with a slight amount of play or a slight press fit.
This flexibility makes the transitional fit ideal for components that require both a certain degree of mobility and secure fixation. Typical applications include plug-in connections, shafts, or housings that require precise alignment and low assembly forces.
A transitional fit ensures that the components are securely seated and can also be fine-tuned as needed. The selection of tolerance classes plays a key role in achieving the desired fit.
Press Fit
A press fit ensures a secure, play-free connection between two components. In this case, the diameter of the outer part is slightly larger than that of the inner part, resulting in a permanent press fit when the parts are joined.
This type of fit is used for heavily loaded connections that must withstand high forces, such as in gears or pulleys. The press fit generates high friction between the components, which can only be broken by applying a great deal of force.
This makes a press fit particularly suitable for applications that require a backlash-free and load-bearing connection. During design, the precise calculation of tolerances and the selection of the appropriate ISO standard are crucial to ensuring the stability and durability of the connection.
